Gastrointestinal Medicine and the Abdomen & Principles of Human Nutrition

Synopsis:
Unit 1: Gastrointestinal medicine - Embryology and anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract and associated structures; basic functions including secretory functions, motility, digestion and absorption; liver function and disease; lipoprotein metabolism and cholesterol; pharmacological management of vomiting, peptic ulceration and diarrhoea.
Unit 2: Principles of human nutrition - 1. Nutrient and food science (biochemistry of nutrients, phytochemicals, food law and safety) 2. Diet, Lifestyle and Disease (evolution of the human diet, food habits of Australians, eating disorders, obesity and physical activity, diets for weight loss, sports nutrition, vegetarian diets, pregnancy, lactation/fetal nutrition, ageing, cancer, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases 3. Nutritional Assessment and Management (food intake & assessment, nutrition counselling on healthy eating and prevention of disease). Assessment: Each unit contributes 50% of your final mark towards MED2042. Unit 1: exam 71% (short answer, multiple choice), viva voce 29%; Unit 2 exam 60% (short answer, multiple choice), assignment 20%, course modules 20% (assessed with on-line quizzes).
