Cardiovascular: Professor C L Gibbs (Physiology) and Associate Professor B McGrath (Medicine). Respiratory: Dr R Rajan (Physiology) and Dr C Hunter (Anatomy)

Synopsis: Unit 1: The anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of the cardiovascular system. Important topics include the haemodynamics of the circulation, regulation of cardiac output, arterial blood pressure, the ECG, venous return and the rationale for the treatment of angina pectoris, congestive heart failure and hypertension.. + Unit 2: The physiology, anatomy, embryology and histology of the respiratory system. Topics include gas laws, exchange, transport and flow, lung volumes and mechanics; airflow and work of breathing; ventilation-perfusion relationships; regulation of ventilation, acid-base balance, and an introduction to clinical respiratory medicine and the relevant basic pharmacology.
