Basic in vitro techniques for embryo production

12 points + 6 weeks (first 5 weeks - two 1-hour lectures, 2-hour tutorial, 1.5-hour seminar, 1.5-hour journal review), 2-hour revision tutorial in Week 6 + Site visit Monash IVF + IRD and MMC + First semester

Synopsis: Basic in vitro techniques essential for the efficient production of embryos in a clinical human IVF program. The theoretical basis of the techniques of embryo and oocyte handling, oocyte maturation and the preparation of oocytes for use in IVF, as well as the techniques of IVF, embryo transfer, assisted hatching, and embryo biopsy will also be presented and discussed. Students will gain techniques essential to the production of viable embryos in a clinical human IVF program. Students also will become familiar with the different methods of embryo transfer used in an IVF program.

Assessment: Written examination (3 hours): 50% + Presentation of journal review: 20% + Essay (3000 words): 30%
