Synopsis: This subject aims to develop skill in abstract algebra and introduces its diverse applications. Boolean algebra and the design and analysis of switching circuits; groups, quotient groups, morphisms and actions of groups; three-dimensional symmetry groups, crystallographic groups; Pólya-Burnside enumeration; introduction to algebraic coding theory; construction and use of latin squares.
Assessment: Assignment: 30% + Examination: 70%
