Synopsis: Deals with the conduct of criminal proceedings and with the roles of prosecution and defence. The subject will focus on legal research and analysis, awareness and use of learning strategies, oral and written communication, negotiation and advocacy. The subject will explore recognition and resolution of ethical conflicts, and awareness of personal values.

Assessment: Regular feedback provided to students on exercises such as preparation of a brief to counsel and presentation of a plea in mitigation. 50%. Tasks to test students' awareness of ethical issues and ability to apply these. Written memoranda and draft documents totalling 10,000 words and mininum of 2 oral presentations of about 15 minutes each. 50%. Assessed according to the grades "Credit", "Pass", or "Fail".
