Synopsis: An overview of Australia0s geographic environment and the Koorie/Aboriginal economy prior to colonisation. Particular examination will be made of Koorie/Aboriginal religions, lifestyles and kinship systems. The effects of colonisation upon Aborigines0 social and political lives is studied through topics such as the /frontier0; development of theories of race and Aboriginal experiences of racism; /protection0 and missions and reserves; land rights and native title; and the oral tradition within Aboriginal societies.

Assessment: Research essay (3000 words): 45% + Class test (1 hour):20% + Tutorial presentation and written paper (2000 words): 25% + Attendance and participation: 10%
