Synopsis: The development of the Australia-Japan relationship: nineteenth-century fears of an Asian influx; an unwelcome ally during World War One; growing trade ties in the period leading up to World War Two; the wartime experience of Australians; Australia0s role in the Allied occupation of Japan; postwar resources diplomacy; Japan0s emergence as Australia0s major trading partner; and the ramifications of the MFP.

Assessment: Written (3500 words): 35% + Examination (1.5 hours): 50% + Tutorial participation (1000 words): 15%
