Synopsis: This subject aims to develop pre-intermediate competence in spoken and written Japanese. Students successfully completing this subject should be able to express their preferences regarding free time activites and hobbies giving reasons; make requests and ask permission; give advice and make suggestions; make and respond to invitations; use appropriate etiquette in guest-host situations; use the conversation strategies of asking for clarification and reporting hearsay information; write a short letter in Japanese using the correct format; recognise an additional 170 kanji (in total 330).

Assessment: Mid-semester test (1 hour): 25% + Final examination (2 hours): 30% + Listening comprehension test: 10% + Speaking test: 10% + Ongoing assessment, including one essay: 25%
