Synopsis: Students will develop basic communicative competence in spoken Japanese and writing skills of the two basic syllabaries. Students become competent to interact successfully with the Japanese in basic daily life situations.

Assessment: Written test(s): 50% + Aural/oral tests: 25% + Quizzes and assignments: 25%
