Synopsis: The subject consists of two sections: (i) Language (60%) and (ii) Modern Italian in context (40%). (i) Language: The development of language skills through the use of contemporary written, aural and audiovisual materials representing selected situations and registers. Syntax for independent self-expression in Italian (ii) Modern Italian in context: The study of a range of modern Italian texts with reference to the social and cultural contexts in which they were written.

Assessment: (i) Language (continuous assessment, including periodic tests, 40%; end-of-semester test, 20%): 60% + (ii) Modern Italian in context (tutorial work participation, 7%; minor assignment, 8%; essay, 1500 words, 15%; final test, 10%): 40%
