Synopsis: Subject is organised in module form, with contributions from various disciplines. After considering problems inherent in the concept of "Asia", it will include a selection of topics using a comparative perspective including: masculinities/femininities across the region, similarities/differences; the significance of religion in daily life - religious consumerism vs religious fundamentalism; the Asian new rich and globalized consumerism; Japanese management transfer; third world multinationals and third world direct foreign investment; the significance of Australia in regional foreign policies; transferring Asian popular cultures across national boundaries; among others.
Assessment: Research essay (2500 words): 50% + Tutorial presentation (1000 words) 20% + Group research project (3500 words shared equivalent 1000 words per student)
