Synopsis: This subject covers the history of specific ethnic groups in Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Topics include the characteristics of Australian ethnic identity, the experience of Irish and Chinese immigrants, the place of Jews in Australian society, Aboriginal perspectives, the concept of an /Australian way of life,0 challenges to Australian nationalism, and the contemporary politics of immigration and multiculturalism.

Assessment: 8 points - Paper (2000 words): 30% + Research essay (4000 words): 70%. 12 points - Two papers (2000 words each): 40% + Research essay (5000 words): 60%
