Synopsis: A study of the visual, oral, architectural, material and textual sources for the writing of history: their origins and history, the uses made of them by their originators and by later historians, and how they may be read. The subject will also examine the role of historians in collecting, editing and interpreting sources and will conclude with an examination of the main genres of historical discourse. Introduction to the elements of thesis writing.
Assessment: Classroom exercise (1000 words): 20% + Critical essay (3000 words): 40% + Literature review (1000 words): 20% + Project/thesis proposal (1000 words): 20%
