Synopsis: This subject focuses on the various origins of this conflict; understanding of its causes and outcomes; the international significance of the War; the perspectives of 'ordinary Americans' before, during and after the war, and on representations of the conflict in literature and film during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Students will also work on projects in which they research the war aims and experiences of a particular group, political coalition, or individual, coming together late in the semester for a 'convention' at which we will attempt to bring the conflict to a peaceful conclusion.

Assessment: Source criticism exercise (1500 words): 25% + Project report (500 words): 15% + Research essay (3000 words): 40% + Examination (1 hour): 20%
