Synopsis: Origins of the war. French colonialism after 1945 and the deepening US involvement. Cultural and ideological ramifications in Vietnam, the USA and Australia. Styles of warfare. Cold war ideology. The role of the media. Anti-war protest. POW and veterans issues. Approaches to commemoration and remembrance in Vietnam, the USA and Australia. The wider ramifications of the war in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia, will also be studied.
Assessment: Document exercise (500 words): 10% + Class test: 20% + Tutorial presentation and report: 25% + Essay (2500 words): 25% + Final test: 20%
