Synopsis: A comprehensive account of the literary and cultural life in the age of Goethe (1749-1834) as one of the most productive and formative epochs in the history of German culture. The analysis of central cultural texts in German in the tutorial part of the subject will be backed up by lectures on literary and cultural concepts and currents as well as historical background information on the social and political framework of intellectual life in Europe at that time.

Assessment: Class paper (1000 words): 20% + Essay (3000 words): 50% + Final test (1000 words): 30%
