Synopsis: Since the invention of the printing press, the reproduction of cultural knowledge and practice became increasingly reliant on the emerging systems of modern mass media. These systems filter and shape their content according to their imminent social and technical constraints, but they also pick up and propagate new ideas, new topics, new forms. How culture, media and society are related and how this relation shows up in the aesthetics of media products will be the topic of this introductory subject. Working with examples from German mass media, equal emphasis is put on theoretical modeling and practical analysis.
