German Travel Writing from the 18th to the 20th Century

Synopsis: This subject introduces German fictional and non-fictional travel accounts from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century as well as theoretical concepts related to the experience of travel, exploration and colonisation. The encounter with the foreign, in Europe or overseas, and the self-definition of the traveller will be investigated. A major focal point will be the exploration of Australia and the Pacific region by German travellers, scientists and colonists and its literary representation.

Assessment: Class paper (1000 words): 20% + Essay (3000 words): 50% + Final test (1000 words): 30%
