Sustainable cities

Synopsis: The aim of this subject is to identify, describe and interpret the concept of sustainability as it is used in an urban context. The subject will analyse the physical economic, social and political forces that shape the potential sustainability of urban development, and outline ways that it is incorporated into the planning of these cities. These approaches will provide contrasting ways in which the concept is interpreted and used by communities, regions and cities. Examples will be drawn from Australia and the Asia Pacific.

Assessment: Essay (4000 words): 40% + Field work report (1000 words): 10% + Literature review (1000 words): 10% + Examination (3 hours): 40%
