Synopsis: Human genetics including gene mapping, DNA profiling and the molecular basis of genetic disease. Applications to medical genetics including genetic screening, genetic counselling and ethical issues. Population and quantitative genetics including population structure, molecular evolution, mitochondrial DNA variation, pesticide resistance in populations, genetics of human behaviour and polygenic control of human disease. Practicals involve preparation and analysis of human chromosomes, aspects of genetic counselling, and measurement and analysis of genetic variation in natural populations.

Assessment: Written (2500 words): 15% + Examinations (3 hours): 50% + Practical work: 35%
