Synopsis: The development of economic power in Western Europe in recent times. Interrelationships between the state, business and finance, and the different ways in which the state and market interact. Economic power is defined in international, national and multinational terms. The growing strength of German capitalism and its impact on the rest of Europe, especially monetary policy, industrial development, investment and trade. West European responses to the growing strength of the Asian economies and the collapse of the communist bloc.
