Synopsis: 'Creating' Europe is a thematic, conceptual exploration of some competing visions of Europe. Questions addressed include Europe and the Millennium; assumptions surrounding the creation of 'a common European home'; women's role in the creation of Europe;the development of dissimilar familial institutions; nation, nationalism and the language of nations; Christian Europe and the creation of non-Christian 'others' from the Ottoman Empire. The course will conclude by exploring the remaking of Europe in 1989, the 'rediscovery' of Central Europe and discussions about Europe at the turn of the Century.

Assessment: Literature survey (500 words): 5% + Visual exercise (1000 words): 20% + One examination (2 hours): 30% + Essay (2000 words): 40% + Classwork (reading tasks and verbal presentation): 5%
