Practical econometrics

6 points + Second semester + Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour tutorial per week + Prerequisite: ETW1031 or ETW2111 + Prohibitions: ETW2400, ETW3440

Synopsis: This course introduces students to the empirical analysis of relationships between economic variables. The approach is based on linear regression theory, but emphasises 'hands on' data analysis using modern computer software. Topics studies will include properties of least squares estimators, hypothesis testing, the choice of appropriate functional form, the use of dummy variables, and the problems of serial correlation, heteroscedasticity and multicollinearity.

Assessment: Test on matrices (45 minutes): 10% + Written (1 assignment - computing and report): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 60%
