Field geology

6 points + Average 6 hours per week (50 hours of fieldwork, 12 lectures and 10 hours of tutorials) + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: ESC1011 and/or ESC1022, or permission + Corequisite: ESC2011

Synopsis: Includes instruction in the proper use of the geological compass for acquiring structural data, use of aerial photographs for determining accurate locations in the field, assessing outcrop geology, plotting of geological data on base maps, constructing geological maps by synthesising smaller datasets and extrapolation into areas of non-exposure, and the construction of geological cross-sections. A five-day intensive mapping camp in the Buchan area of eastern Victoria is a major component of the course.

Assessment: Geological map and cross-sections: 30% + Field assessment: 20% + Written field report (3000 words): 30% + Tutorial assessment: 20%
