12 points + First semester + Clayton + 3 hours per week + Prerequisites: a major in any one of the School disciplines (or equivalent) + Prohibition: VSA4650, CLS4650

Synopsis: The subject is designed to introduce the subjects of Sign systems and Framing devices, Subject and Subjectivity, Phenomenology, Reception Theory, Critical Theory and the Avant-Garde, Postcolonialism, post-Humanism: we shall discuss topics such as the literary text, photography, the status of the work of art, theories of meaning and reception, and include consideration of the theoretical works of Bourdieu, Derrida, Husserl, Barthes, and others.

Assessment: Two tutorial papers (2000 words) 20% each: 40% + Essay (5000 words): 50% concepts. + Participation in discussion: 10%
