Synopsis: Through the examination of a range of texts, history, political documents, fiction, poetry and film, this course will examine how the landscape and environment of the north of England, its countryside and cities, its people, their histories, cultures and identities have been represented in differing ways, at differing times for differing political or cultural purposes. It will focus on the representation of childhood, work and unemployment, gender, ethnic, class identity, how each of these feeds into and helps shape, reinforce or contest a sense of regional or cultural identity, how this identity exists in varying states of tension with a dominant, centred notion of national identity.
Assessment: Seminar paper to be submitted as a minor essay (1000 words): 20% + Major essay (3000 words): 40% + Exam (2 hours, 2 essays): 30% + Seminar participation: 10%
