Synopsis: Process concepts: basic process elements, plant, measurements, controller. Control loop topologies. Control hierarchies: direct digital control, supervisory control, distributed control configurations, batch sequencing, process interface. Modeling and identification: development of first and second-order models. Sampled data theory: z plane, stability, transforms, closed loop sampled systems, selection of sampling interval. PID controllers - tuning, initialisation. Multiloop control schemes, feedforward, cascade, interacting loops and decoupling. Introduction to robust, fuzzy and model predictive control. Automatic flight control systems.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 80% + Assignment/Laboratory work: 20%
