Synopsis: This subject examines how form and function in English are seen as part of the interaction between the participants in a language situation, both in speech and writing. It is based on a functional approach to language study, especially on Halliday's concept of language as a social semiotic which observes language in its broad social context as a system of choices rather than an isolated phenomenon existing apart from outside influence. The main theme of the course is based on Halliday's concept of field, tenor and mode; this theme connects each session and allows a deeper investigation of their language use
