Synopsis: Contemporary approaches to the interpretation of second-language acquisition and the planning of second-language teaching and learning programs. Issues include similarities and differences between first and second-language acquisition; the /critical period0 hypothesis, the /age0 question and the differences between children and adults as language learners; differences between formal (classroom) and informal situations of second-language acquisition; the factors determining success or failure in second-language acquisition.
Assessment: Class presentation: 20% + Tests: 30% + Examination by essay (4000 words): 50%
