Synopsis: Introduction to modern algebra. Introduction to topological vector spaces, geometrical interpretations. Linear operators and their adjoints; functionals. Projection method for solving linear operator equations; connection with variational method. Introduction to the finite element method. Sparse matrix methods.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 70% + Practical work and assignments: 30%
