Synopsis: Data transmission: line codes; modulated digital data transmission systems including the spectra and error-rate performance of double-sideband suppressed-carrier, single-sideband, vestigial sideband and quadrature amplitude modulation. Fundamental optical fibre transmission properties: index profile, V-parameter, mode spot size and cut-off wavelength; effects on distortion and attenuation characteristics of single-mode optical fibres. Design of single-mode optical fibres exhibiting appropriate dispersion and loss characteristics; dispersion shifted or compensated fibres. Optical fibre link and systems design: power and rise-time budgets, optical amplifiers, optical receiver analysis and design, optical transmitters and optical fibre networks.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 80% + Practical work/Laboratory work: 20%
