Synopsis: This subject will introduce students to the diversity of women's work in the theatre during the last century. Its specific focus will be on women's representation in selected theatrical genres including melodrama, circus, comedy, community theatre, Asian puppetry, cabaret and monodrama. It will introduce some significant plays written by women as well as looking at the roles women have played as performers, directors, producers and critics in order to change the theatre.Practical work and performance analysis will encourage students to apply their understanding of the historical and cultural significance of women's theatrical experience to contemporary theatre.

Assessment: Class paper (1000 words): 20% + Essay (2500 words): 40% + Group devised performance: 40%
