General Immunology: Theory and Applied

Synopsis: This subject will cover the generation of the humoral immune response, the function of immunoglobulin isotypes, and the contribution of accessory cells and the complement system to this defence system. New insight into T cell mediated immunity will also be covered, including antigen presentation to T cells and T cell recognition of antigen peptides complexed with MHC molecules. Students will gain practical experience in antibody generation, purification and modifications to produce reagents for research and diagnostic use. Applications will include flow cytometry, immunohistology, immunodiffusion and immunoassays.

Assessment: Theory examinations: 25% + Oral presentations: 10% + Two essays (2000 words each): 15% + Practical examination: 25% + Practical class reports: 25%
