Synopsis: This subject covers the spectrum, pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis of autoimmune and allergic diseases. Topics relating to autoimmune diseases will include an overview of systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases, mechanisms of tissue damage in autoimmune disease, and diagnostic tests for autoimmune diseases. In reviewing allergic diseases the principles of the allergic immune response will be included together with clinical examples of the spectrum of allergic disease and the use of laboratory tests in their diagnosis. There will also be presentations on new approaches to treatment of autoimmune and allergic diseases.

Assessment: Oral presentations: 20% + Four assignments (1000-2000 words each): 80%
