12 Points + Two 1-hour lectures, one 2 hour tutorial per week + First semester + Alfred

Synopsis: This subject will cover the generation of the humoral immune response, including the structure of the B cell antigen receptor complex and the role of helper T cells in B cell production of antibody. The distribution and function of immunoglobulin isotypes, and the contribution of Fc-receptor bearing accessory cells and the complement system to this defence system will also be discussed. New insight into T cell mediated immunity will be covered, including the generation of T cell antigen ligands, the structure of major histocompatibility complex gene products and the T cell antigen receptor complex, and how these components interact in the generation of effector T cells.
