Synopsis: Systematic approach to engineering data collection, analysis and interpretation. Scope includes data, information and knowledge; data presentation; errors; randomness, fuzziness, chaos; exploratory data analysis; basic statistical procedures; systematic experimental design; stochastic and deterministic models; modelling in engineering systems. These topics will be taught using a Problem Based Learning approach using problems relating to flood frequency, speeds and distribution of traffic, variability of soil strength, and fatigue in concrete structures.
