Synopsis: Key intellectual issues in twentieth-century China and a methodical introduction to the multi-disciplinary nature of Chinese studies. A range of different representations of Chinese culture and society will be discussed. There will also be in-depth studies of developments in modern Chinese language usage as a consequence of Westernisation, Maoist politics and cultural globalisation.
Assessment: Three seminar papers (1500 words each): 75% + Oral presentations and seminar participation: 25%
