Synopsis: Students will learn about selected Australian and American cultural institutions. Specific places and institutions in Australia and overseas to be studied and visited include museums, libraries and galleries in Melbourne and the USA. Students will undertake comparative case study investigations. International component in intensive mode June-July 2000. Likely places to be visited: Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, New York. Likely institutions: Chicago Historical Society, the Smithsonian Institution, etc.

Assessment: Literature review (1000 words): 20% + Two practical presentation / fieldwork assignments (1000 words each): 40% + Research essay / project (3000 words) 40%
