Synopsis: The history of feminism in South Asia. The impact of colonialism, class, caste and gender debates on present day feminist and NGO (non-governmental) movements in South Asia. Postcolonial critiques of gender, culture and society in relation to the regions in South Asia. Themes include nationalism and religious laws, heath issues, cinematography, ecofeminism, tradeunionisms, subaltern and diaspora studies etc.

Assessment: Literature-survey essay (3000 words): 30% + Research essay (6000 words): 60% + Seminar participation: 10%
