Synopsis: The subject will investigate the archaeology of Dakhleh Oasis and its environs as revealed by fieldwork carried out primarily since 1977. It will assess the latest developments in Egyptian archaeology and explore the impact of regional areas upon the development of Nile Valley culture. A principal focus is the impact of Saharan cultures on the early evolution of Egyptian culture. Throughout there will be a critical assessment of the interpretation of the data by archaeologists.
Assessment: Two research essays (3500 words each): 80% + Seminar participation (equivalent 2000 words) : 20%
