Synopsis: The character and operation of Athenian democracy as it was in the later fifth and the fourth centuries BC is examined, and a selection of translations of authentic texts produced by this society is studied for the insights it provides into classical Athenian culture and thought.

Assessment: Tutorial paper (1000 words): 15% + Essay (1500 words): 35% + Examination (2 hours): 50%.
