This course has been designed for graduates from non-economics disciplines who wish to gain a formal qualification in applied economic studies. Alternatively, students may hold a degree in commerce or business during which they completed only the equivalent of first year economics or which is of no more than ten years standing. The course will target local and international students who are unable to study full-time or who do not have access to a university campus for campus based part-time study. Applicants require a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or, an executive certificate from the faculty of business and economics with an average grade of credit or above.
Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of wordprocessing and other software packages.
The Graduate Diploma in Applied Economics will normally be completed during four academic semesters, two subjects each semester. Students will be required to complete three core subjects and five electives. The electives are currently existing subjects taught within the major in economics in the Bachelor of Business degree and adapted for accelerated learning level and studied by distance education:

The list of elective
subjects may be extended to include existing undergraduate economics subjects
offered at the second and third-year levels on other campuses. Such subjects
would be adapted for accelerated learning by distance education.
Students will also have the opportunity to select up to two elective subjects
from another faculty. Such subjects will complement the chosen area of
specialisation and will also be adapted for accelerated learning by distance
education.
Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each subject. Generally a pass is required in the final examination to pass the subject.
Applicants who have completed graduate-level subjects at a recognised tertiary institution, within the last five years, which are similar in content to a subject forming part of the course of study may apply for a credit exemption to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.
