- Colorectal cancer Prevention of experimental colorectal cancer
using NSAIDs and other chemo-preventive agents; determination of mechanisms for
NSAID prevention; characterisation of colorectal tumours, growth factors and
inhibitors, COX-1 and COX-2 expression in colonic tumours, aberrant crypt
studies; apoptosis.
- Liver metastases Characterisation of liver metastases from
colorectal cancer in the experimental model; microvascular structure and
angiogenesis; influence of growth and inhibitory factors; clinical studies of
treatment of colorectal cancer with particular emphasis on the use of Nd-Yag
laser for local tumour destruction.
- Ulceration and repair in the gastrointestinal tract Studies of
the process of healing of experimental gastric ulcers; the effect of age on the
development and healing of ulcers and the influence of NSAIDs on the process.
COX-1 and COX-2 expression studies in gastric ulcers; angiogenesis,
microvascular density studies; gastric ulcer healing and NSAIDs in the young
and aged rats; wound healing in vitro; apoptosis in ulcers;
chemo-prevention - NSAID therapy, gastrotoxicity effects.
- Skin Growth factors for keratinocyte culture optimisation;
effects of electric/magnetic fields on wound healing rate; autologous
chondrocytes for repair of articular cartilage in traumatised joints;
chrondrocyte culture - matrix antibody binding to bovine/human fibronectin.
- Obesity Clinical studies of the laparoscopic treatment of obesity
with the Lap Band. Consequences of weight loss on medical, physical and
psychosocial status.
- Cardiopulmonary transplantation and circulatory support
Improvement of methods of preserving the donor heart and lungs for
transplantation.
- The ageing heart and cardiac surgery Improving the understanding
of how the heart in the elderly patient tolerates open heart surgery.
Developing new treatments to protect the ageing heart during cardiac surgery
especially by the use of co-enzyme Q10.
