Sonographic methods 2 and sonographic professional skills

Objectives This subject aims to provide students with the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to the conduct of obstetric sonographic examinations. Completion of this subject will enable students to participate in such examinations and recognise and describe the sonographic appearances of normal foetal anatomy, physiology and associated pathology. The subject will extend students' understanding of professional behaviour and the concept of ethics with application to sonography and introduces the student to the application of the law and legal procedures in hospitals. Completion of this subject will enable students to describe the legal obligations of hospitals, identify and describe various medico-legal situations and differentiate between and describe appropriate legal terms.

Synopsis Sonographic and radiographic anatomy of the female reproductive system and the developing foetus. Scanning methods for obstetric ultrasound. Selection of appropriate instrumentation and transducers. Optimisation of technical factors. Assessment of foetal growth and maturity; foetal abnormalities and complications of pregnancy, together with sonographic appearances. Artifacts. Selection of images to record relevant anatomy and pathology. Anotating the image. The presentation of sonographic information for reporting. The hysterosalpingogram. History and development of Victorian and Australian law pertinent to hospital settings. Statute law, case law, tort law and property law. Hospital applications of trespass to the person and to the property. Vicarious liability, negligence, criminal law in the medical setting, consent and hospital/medical insurance.
