Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to demonstrate an awareness of the legal implications of nursing actions taken in practice; analyse the legal implications of the nurse's professional relationship with patients, their families and other health care providers; identify strategies which may provide assistance in resolving legal issues which arise in the various nursing arenas; demonstrate a knowledge of common law and statute law pertinent to nursing practice; differentiate between the concepts of law and morality.
Synopsis This subject will introduce students to the Australian legal system including the processes and institutions which impact on professional practice. Students will examine a variety of issues relevant to contemporary health law in order to practice confidently and competently. Emphasis is placed on the nurses legal responsibilities to patients, patient families and professional colleagues in the various health care settings.
Assessment Class Presentation and paper: 40% · Written assignment: 60%
