Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to describe what it means to be a scholar of nursing; demonstrate competency in written communication; demonstrate an ability to use information technologies to gather health information; identify core competencies and standards associated with professional values; demonstrate an ability to use library resources to meet their learning needs; identify the role of critical thinking and decision making frameworks for the provision and processes involved in the delivery of quality nursing care; examine a number of theoretical frameworks that purport to describe nursing; describe the place of the nursing profession in the delivery of health care; provide an in-depth literature review relevant to their health discipline.
Synopsis The aim of this subject is to enable students to develop tertiary study skills and knowledge which will assist them to become beginning scholars of nursing. For this they require sound written, information literacy, library skills and knowledge of the theroetical foundations to nursing. Particular attention will be given to the development of literacy, electronic communication skills and critical thinking for decision making. This subject aims to give students an introduction to, and an understanding of, literature, theories and professional values associated with the discipline of nursing.
