Synopsis This subject is designed to assist students in understanding the cultural and environmental context in which mental health services are developed and delivered. The following topics are highlighted: cultural identities of clinician and client (consumer) in the diagnostic process; historical perspectives on diagnosis, treatment and service delivery; the effects of trauma on mental health; the so-called 'culture-bound syndromes'; mental health legislation and current trends in service delivery; the challenge of prevention; and ethics in practice.
