Synopsis This subject must be taken concurrently with MPH1040 (Epidemiology). Together, they are prerequisites for advanced biostatistics and some other elective units. Whilst minimal previous knowledge is assumed, the learning curve is fairly steep. Along with MPH1040, this subject aims to provide students with basic quantitative skills required in clinical epidemiology. Content includes descriptive statistics, probability distributions, estimation and confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance and regression, contingency tables and selection of appropriate statistical tests. Students will be required to have access to a hand calculator equipped with elementary scientific functions (eg Casio FX-100). Access to a personal computer (eg IBM-PC) is not required for this unit.
