Therapeutic communication

Objectives Upon completion of this subject, students will be expected to discuss theoretical concepts of communication in the nursing context; apply communication skills in interpersonal and group interactions; discuss the use of language in communicating with colleagues and clients; discuss communication processes in organisations which will contribute to meeting organisational goals and ensure quality client care; relate the concept of holism to therapeutic communication; explore alternative forms of therapeutic communication, such as therapeutic touch, which enhance clinical nursing practice; and critically reflect upon aspects of therapeutic relationships and communication in their own area of nursing practice.

Synopsis This subject has been designed to expand upon students' existing knowledge of therapeutic communication and to enable students to critically reflect upon communication within their nursing practice. It is intended that the student will gain an understanding of the conceptual basis and clinical applications of therapeutic communication; and will develop their skills in professional interaction and communicating therapeutically.
