Managing rural health services

Mrs D Cole

Distance education · First semester/second semester

Synopsis The management process is more complex in the rural environment where people live and work together and where relationships and positions outside of the work environment may be very influential. The manager of a rural health service must know the community and its political structures and understand its aspirations so that there is an opportunity to align the goals of both and avoid conflict. This subject has been designed to enable you to develop a conceptual framework for understanding the management process and organisational change; enhance your skills in utilising your role to contribute to the development of your organisation and your community; and recognise the importance of people in the management and success of an organisation. The twelve topics are (1) a conceptual structure for management; (2) organisational analysis; (3) organisational design; (4) human resource management; (5) negotiation for positive outcomes; (6) patient focus; (7) organisational culture; (8) risk management; (9) managed care, (10) community development; (11) change and (12) conflict management.
